This listing is for an absolutely stunning and exceptionally large antique silver plate tea set accompanied by its impressive matching serving tray. The tray is marked Martin Hall of Sheffield, England while the tea set itself bears the WEP mark, the export trade name used by WMF of Germany. These pieces were acquired together and have most likely remained together through the years due to their close production periods and complementary design.
The magnificent tray was crafted by Martin Hall of Sheffield, England and dates circa 1854–1863 based on the company hallmarks and style of markings used during that period.
The tea service was produced by WMF under their WEP Co. export mark, which stood for Wurttemberg Electroplate Company. WMF, or Wurttembergische Metallwarenfabrik, used the WEP name for exports to English-speaking countries in the early 20th century.
WMF was founded in 1853 as a partnership between Daniel Straub and brothers Josef and Friedrich Schweizer. In 1892 the company developed and patented their renowned “Perfect Hard Silver Plating” process, which applied heavier silver plating to high-wear areas for increased durability and longevity.
This extraordinary set features elegant Victorian and Edwardian styling with an incredibly grand presence that makes it perfect for display, entertaining, or adding to an advanced silver collection. The scale and beauty of this set are truly impressive and the photographs do not fully capture its impact in person.
The set includes:
1 Serving Tray measuring approximately 29.5 inches wide x 19.5 inches deep x 2.75 inches tall
1 Tilting Tea Pot on Stand measuring approximately 18 inches tall x 10.5 inches wide x 9 inches deep
1 Warmer
1 Coffee Pot measuring approximately 9.5 inches tall x 9.5 inches wide x 6.5 inches deep
1 Creamer measuring approximately 6 inches tall x 5 inches wide x 4 inches deep
1 Covered Sugar Bowl measuring approximately 6 inches tall x 6 inches wide x 6 inches deep
The pieces remain in very nice antique condition overall and display beautifully. There are two areas of silver plate loss located on the underside of different pots.
One retaining pin is missing from the tilting stand, though the tilting mechanism still functions as one pin remains attached to the chain. One handle has slight looseness at the bone spacers and could easily be stabilized if desired.
This remarkable antique tea service is ready to use, display, and enjoy for many years to come and would make a stunning centerpiece in any home or collection.
