Antique Indian Brass Oil Lamp Dhokra Cast Hindu Temple Diya Ritual Lamp Decor

This is for a vintage Dhokra lost-wax cast Century Oil Lamp / Hindu oil lamp. The oil lamp has a significant role in the Hindu Religion and in their homes and temples.
This is called a single wick lamp used for worship in the family home. This most likely dates to mid-20th century.

These would be lit using ghee / oil in the morning / using a wick of cotton. It is believed the light from the lamp removes darkness and the burning light helps in the gaining of knowledge.
The light also allows the worshipper to view their god as it is often placed along an image of their deity. Some people also think the oil represents negative energy and the wick represents ones ego.
So when the lamp is lit the ego and the negative spirits are then removed from ones soul.

This piece is highly decorated with figures of Cobra snakes, men with Indian elephant style masks, men holding basket of food, small dogs and swirled type coins on the edges. The process to make these types of lamps is quite involved and very time consuming and a true art form. There are videos on the web that show the process and are interesting to watch.

This piece measures: 12 3/4 inches tall x 7.5 inches wide x 5.5 inches deep
