This is for a wonderful antique English solid brass "Peacock Fan" fireplace screen, dating from the late 1800s to early 1900s. This is an exceptionally rare example featuring dramatic Gargoyle ornamentation—one of the most unusual designs I have encountered. Having sold many antique fireplace fans over the years, this is the first Gargoyle example I have found, as most early screens are decorated in traditional Victorian motifs.

Unlike the lighter mass-produced fireplace fans made during the 1970s and 1980s, this antique is crafted from heavy, solid English brass with remarkable quality, weight, and craftsmanship. At approximately 15.5 pounds, it is a substantial piece that immediately reflects its age and superior construction.

The folding peacock fan design is beautifully detailed with intricate pierced filigree blades that create wonderful reflections from firelight or ambient lighting. The individual blades feature uniquely cut decorative tips, showcasing the exceptional craftsmanship of the period.

A large raised Gargoyle decorates both the front and back of the screen, while an ornate finial handle allows for easy carrying and adds to its impressive appearance. The screen folds closed and secures with side hooks for convenient storage when not in use.

Although antique in age, its dramatic styling blends beautifully with Gothic Revival, Neoclassical, Hollywood Regency, Art Deco, Tudor, Medieval, and Traditional interiors.

Measurements:
30 inches tall including the finial handle
23 inches tall without the finial
39½ inches wide when fully opened
7 inches deep at the base
Weight: Approximately 15.5 pounds

This fireplace screen has been meticulously cleaned and polished to highlight the beauty of the brass. Because it is unlacquered, it will naturally develop a rich antique patina over time or may be polished periodically to maintain its brilliant finish.

Please use care when opening and closing the fan so the blades do not swing open too quickly, helping preserve the mechanism and craftsmanship.

This extraordinary antique fireplace screen is a rare opportunity to own a distinctive English hearth accessory that will become the focal point of any fireplace or room for generations to come.
